Retired Ford Scientist to Receive SAE Award for Automotive Engineering Innovation

WARRENDALE, Pa., Feb. 28, 2007 - Dr. Stefan Korcek, retired senior scientist, Ford Motor Company, has been selected to receive SAE International's Edward N. Cole Award for Automotive Engineering Innovation. He will be presented the award during the SAE Detroit Section meeting, May 22, at the Ford Motor Conference Center in Dearborn, Mich.

This award recognizes an SAE International member whose innovative design is described in an SAE paper or whose lifetime of accomplishment is judged to be a significant achievement in automotive engineering. The award honors the memory of Edward N. Cole, former President and Chief Operating Officer of General Motors Corporation.
The SAE Foundation funds this award. In addition to supporting the awards, recognition and scholarship programs of SAE International, the SAE Foundation develops and funds programs and incentives that foster student interest in engineering, scientific and technical education.

Korcek worked at Ford for 31 years before retiring in 2002. During his time at Ford, he supervised lubricant and tribology research and held numerous positions in the Chemical and Physical Sciences Laboratory and the Powertrain and Vehicle Research Laboratory. Through this work, he established himself as one of the leading international experts in the lubrication of automotive powertrains. His research has led to improved fuel economy, extended oil change intervals, increased engine life, and reduced exhaust emissions and engine warranty expenses. Korcek was also a prime mover in the automotive industry's effort to develop a worldwide engine oil specification and classification system. This effort resulted in a system of specifications that are now used by the American Petroleum Institute.

Prior to joining Ford, Korcek was an associate professor in the petroleum chemistry and technology department at Slovak Technical University in Bratislava, and served as a post-doctorate Fellow and research officer at the National Research Council of Canada in Ottawa. During a sabbatical leave from Ford in 1991, he was a visiting professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan.

Korcek has published more than 100 technical publications and two patents. He has given more than 150 scientific and technical lectures on lubrication and tribology in 17 countries around the globe. SAE International has honored Korcek with the McFarland Award, two Presidential Recognition Awards, the Excellence in Oral Presentation Award and the Fuels and Lubricants Division Recognition Award. Ford has honored Korcek with the Ford Innovation Award and three Publication Awards.

An SAE Fellow, Korcek has been a member of SAE International since 1979 and a member of the American Chemical Society since 1968.

Korcek received his master's in chemistry and his doctorate in technical sciences from Slovak Technical University. He resides in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
